About

About Iona's Teaching

I offer personalised mentorship in all things music production and folk fiddle, tailoring each session to your goals and current level — whether you’re refining your musical practice, preparing for further study, taking to the stage (or a folky pub session!) building confidence in the studio, or releasing fully produced music to a professional standard. I focus on helping my students do their best work and develop skills that last a lifetime.

Lessons combine bespoke discussion, practical, hands-on tasks, and expert feedback grounded in real-world musical application.

With over 10 years of professional and academic experience, I have tutored over 100 1:1 students and lead workshops and lectures at Goldsmiths, University of London.

My qualifications include a Master's degree in Popular Music, Grade 8 Scottish Folk Fiddle, and two years of specialist studio engineering training.  My credits span a wide range of artists and projects, including work with Geese, BBC Radio 4, the GB Rowing Team, Bill Dare, Myrkur, Goblin Band, and Folk Of The Round Table.

I bring all of this real-world experience, training, and enthusiasm for professional development to my mentees and students, so you can be sure your learning is in safe and capable hands.

Each session is followed by written notes capturing key insights, progress, and next steps. Online lessons can also be recorded, allowing you to revisit sessions at any time.

Learn: Music Production

At its simplest, music production is the careful creative process of capturing and showcasing the raw recordings of a track, arranging them in the sonic sphere in such a way that a listener can truly connect with the artist's intention.

More complexly, it can build an intriguing world of sound around the core songwriting/compositional elements through synthesis and sound design, extra recorded or MIDI instruments, field sounds, and piles of SFX and plugins such as reverbs, delays, pitch shifts, EQs, compressors, distortions, and more, surrounding the listener with energetic aural intricacies.

I teach all of this and more. From the basics of how to use music production software and how to put sounds together, to creating fully recorded, produced, mixed and mastered music projects ready for release.

For artists, producers, and engineers who are further along, I offer focused, in-depth mentorship around career direction and professional development.

Music Production

My violin lessons are for anyone who wants to learn to play folk fiddle. We will study what brings traditional music to life, with a particular focus on the Celtic traditions of the British Isles and Ireland. I will teach you to be able to play tunes with dexterity, speed, expression, and character.

Musical improvisation can also be studied to allow you to elaborate on the music you're playing with confidence. I will ensure we cover all the technical skills which will allow your playing to flourish. For more advanced players I am able to offer coaching and advice as you look to bring your skills to sessions, local gigs, or even bigger stages.

For neo-folkies, the electric violin and octave violin can be explored, as well as how effects pedals such as loops, reverbs, delays and distortion and more can be used to modify the sound of your playing into something truly unique and expressive.

For more advanced students we can take a more personalised look at performance technique, pushing the boundaries of artistry, violin composition, and advanced violin technique. Sessions will be presented in a supportive way through the exploration of repertoire, practical tasks, practice plans, and constructive discussion.

"Exceptional and very patient teacher. I was a "mature student" who had never touched a violin before but was immediately put at ease with a tailored training programme that focused on the type of music I enjoy. Most recommended!!!"
